The Errol Grimes Dance Group marked its
anniversary with a June 14 (2009) event honoring local “Champions of the
Arts.” The event attended by 80 persons took place at the brownstone
home and garden of Dr. Marco A. Mason in Brooklyn’s historic Fort Greene
neighborhood.
Who and what is a Champion of the Arts? These are persons who understand
the value inherent in art performance, and its importance to individual
and community well-being – and have been supportive and helpful to Errol
Grimes Dance Group over the years.
The EGDG Champion of the Arts honorees included: Dr. Marco Mason,
consultant and chief executive officer of the Caribbean Women’s Health
Association; New York State Supreme Court Judge Sylvia Hinds-Radix;
Journalist Tony Best; Actor Andre DeShields; Brooklyn Deputy Borough
President Yvonne Graham, and long-time EGDG patron Elinor Ratner. The
event also featured an esteemed list of presenters, including Jessica
Odle-Barril, former Barbados Consul General in New York; Lance
Westergard, dance department head at Hofstra University; Professor
Clinton Turner Davis of Colorado College; and retired New York City
Principal Mary Timson.
The event included a VIP reception, and was followed by an EGDG
performance (from By the Sea) and public reception, featuring teas and
light refreshments. |
